September is still summer: six plans to make the most of it

We are at that time of year where two irreconcilable factions return to battle: can September be considered summer?

  • Calendar maximalists say that the season does not end until the 21st. So yes, September SHOULD be considered “summer.”
  • The beach and mojito purists reveal themselves: back to school, to the office, to the present day. No more traumatic month. September is the death of summer.

If you ask us... we have the depression on us like the seconds... If it weren't for the fact that September is also a great month to extend getaways and vacations until the body, the days off and the heat hold up.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EVERY WEEKEND

Just at the moment when the beaches are empty, the hotels are dropping prices to save what is left of the season, the heat subsides but not too much and your favorite places are decolonized... You appear.

September is the refuge of the shy tourist, the one who hates crowds, the last bargain opportunist, the office worker who enjoys his empty city in August. It is the last refuge of summer.

  • Because we still have the torrent of appealing places that Spain offers once August folds its sails (September in Belgium doesn't sound so appealing)
  • Because the heat still holds (thanks for something, global warming
  • Because with a free day, a Friday when you leave work early or a weekend when you get up early, you get away in conditions

For all that, today we bring you six ideas so you can stretch out your vacation gum:

1. BEGUR AND THE COSTA BRAVA

Think of the Costa Brava in August. Do you see? Not even a square meter to spread your towel on and a 45-minute traffic jam to access the beach and park the car.

September is the solution to your problems. Yes, the Costa Brava is everything that has been written about it and much more, but better without people and if you have a weekend waiting for you in Begur. Sa Tuna, Sa Riera, the Aiguablava cove,... unbelievable waters and some of the best beach restaurants in Spain and peace.

If you have time and it fits, you can top it off with the Salt Festival in L'Escala and its amazing anchovies.

2. THE ALGARVE

Last week of September, Olhão, a small fishing village in the Algarve. Temperature? 32ºC.

The Algarve 🇵🇹 is crying out for a weekend to crown the holidays of the year. For several reasons: its rocky coves; your fresh fish at any beach bar you find; cities like Faro or Lagos; or its endless Atlantic beaches such as Amado or Borteira .

Summer ends there, in all its glory.

3. VEJER AND THE CADITIAN COAST

Cádiz has everything:
  • Beaches? As many as you want and not just Bologna: Zahora, Zahara de los Atunes, Barrosa, Conil, ...
  • Mountain? Take the car and take a walk through Grazalema, the wettest point in Spain.
  • Culture? Night in Jerez, visit to the winery, the next day tuna tasting at El Campero . White towns? Vejer (top), Arcos a stone's throw away or Tarifa (the most party-goer).

Cádiz has flow, good vibes in the air and the feeling that summer is a constant state of mind.

4. The Matarraña

The interior also offers cool refuges for a long weekend. El Matarraña is the best example. Sheltered by the Ports of Tortosa and Beceite, it is a mountainous corner between Aragon and the coast, full of cool towns and paradisiacal pools.

You have swamps that look like miniature seas ( Pena ), brutal waterfalls ( Salto de la Portellada ) and gorges of turquoise waters ( El Parrizal ).

It is the “Mediterranean”, compressed into the mountains.

5. From Xàbia to Calpe

Impossible between July and August, Cabo de la Nao is cleared of humanity at these times.

Steep cliffs on Moraig or Granadella beach; the ecological walk between the Peñón de Ifalch and Fustera beach; Moraira and its rocky coves; and the Ambolo viewpoint, with the homonymous cove just below and always empty (because in theory you can't go down but you can).

Nothing you don't already know. But at the best time of the year it tastes much better.

6. Alto Douro

And finally, back to the mountain. It has the Sierra de Soria, far to the north, where you only get there because you have decided to, some of the most amazing corners of the peninsular geography. Coves in abundance: the Duero is still warm and you can swim in the pools it creates in La Caldera; and you also have endless natural pools, like those in Salduero , with a great atmosphere.

And what makes you feel adventurous? You can go up to the Lagunas de Neila, with a spectacular viewpoint towards the Picos de Urbión and Sierra Cebollera; or go up to the Black Lagoon, surrounded by Scandinavian-style forests.

In conclusion, whatever your destination, sea or mountains, while the heat is still beating and you want to tie yourself to the spirit of summer for one more weekend; We push you to do it. Suitcase, don't think about it too much and door.

Your body will thank you in October.
