The perfect shower

There are as many types of showers as there are kinds of quickies 👉🏽👌🏽 (speedy, hot, relaxing…) and today we’re breaking down the perfect one — the science of showering (the actual showering, not that other kind 😏): the one that mixes pleasure, health and efficiency in equal parts.

7 TIPS FOR THE PERFECT SHOWER

1. HOW LONG SHOULD IT LAST?

A quick one is always efficient.
Between 5–7 minutes — the time it takes to soft-boil an egg or cook instant ramen — is the sweet spot. Long enough to get properly clean without drying your skin, while saving water and energy (around 50–70 L instead of 120 L for a long shower).

2. CHOT, HOTTER… OR COLD ENOUGH TO FREEZE YOUR NIPPLES OFF?

We’re aiming for something just above thermal neutrality — that sweet spot between warm and tepid (around 34–38°C). Hotter dries your skin, colder makes you regret life choices.
Pro tip: cold showers? Brilliant for the brave — circulation boost, immune kick, mental clarity. But honestly, dropping the temp for the last 30–60 seconds does the job perfectly.

3. THE PROPER SANDWICH: WATER – SOAP – WATER

Start with a good 30 seconds of just water. Let it soak in — get properly drenched. You’d be surprised how many people skip the warm-up and go straight in hard (in life and in showers), and then complain about lack of… lubrication (yes, we mean the soap, obvs).
Once you’re fully soaked, a classic debate arises:

  • Team “soap straight on skin”, or

  • Team “lather in hands first, then apply with palms / sponge / mitt”?

It’s down to preference. The second makes your bar last longer — but only if you replace your sponge every six weeks, unless you fancy scrubbing yourself with something that looks like a carwash mop.

4. PRODUCTS WORTHY OF YOUR FINE BODY

You watch what you eat, avoid itchy fabrics and cheap underwear — same rules apply in the shower. What you put on your skin doesn’t just rinse off; it stays.
That’s why you want quality soaps (ahem): ones that clean without stripping, add a touch of nourishment or active ingredients, and make you actually enjoy applying, reapplying, and catching a whiff of yourself afterwards.

5. THE MOVEMENT: TOP TO BOTTOM, INSIDE TO OUT

Once you’ve got your soap of choice, order matters. Go from head to toe, inside to outside — that way, water runs naturally and carries away the dirt.
Commonly neglected spots: back of the neck and ears, elbows, knees and the soles of your feet. All deserve a bit of attention. Remember: water alone doesn’t do the scrubbing for you.

6. THE MAGIC OF DRYING OFF

Still inside the shower, start by wiping off the water with your hands — like a human windscreen wiper. That alone saves your towel about 60% of the work.
Once out, treat your towel like kitchen roll on spilled coffee: dab, don’t drag. Gentle pats, not sanding your skin down.

7. THE AFTE-SHOWER AFFECTION

Even with the right temperature, good soap and gentle drying, your skin can still flake. Seasonal changes (hello winter) or multiple showers a day can leave you drier than a student fridge.
Enter body lotion — not every day, not every time, but when you need it. It’ll keep your gym gains, pool glow or cycling tan looking its best. Twenty seconds of self-care goes a long way.

8. BONUS TIP: HOW TO LAST LONGER

(We’re still talking soap, promise.)

  • Before using: keep it stored in a cool, dry drawer.

  • During the shower: don’t leave it under the running water.

  • Afterwards: let it dry on a soap dish, not sitting in a puddle.

  • And if it’s gone in under a week… either someone’s stealing it or your bathroom’s more humid than a London tube carriage in August.

With all that, you’re more than ready to enjoy your shower to the fullest — a, an, on, under, against and alongside… this is one shower where all the prepositions fit. Solo or accompanied.

The perfect shower

There are as many showers as there are types of detonation 👉🏽👌🏽 (quick, hot, relaxing, …) and today we dissect its perfect science (that of the shower, not that of the ñiki-ñiki): the one that combines pleasure, health and efficiency in equal parts.

7 TIPS FOR A PERFECT SHOWER

1. HOW LONG SHOULD IT LAST? A QUICK RUSH IS ALWAYS EFFICIENT.

Between 5 and 7 minutes, like a soft-boiled egg or canned ramen, is the ideal time. Enough to clean thoroughly without drying out, while saving water and energy (about 50–70 L compared to 120 L for a long shower).

2. HOT, HOT OR COLD TO GRATE GLASS WITH YOUR NIPPLES?

We look for a value slightly above thermal neutrality, that is, lukewarm (34–38°C). Hotter temperatures dry out the temperature, colder temperatures cause discomfort.

  • Pro-tip: Are cold showers good for you? Yes, for the bravest among us and for their benefits. But if you lower the temperature for the last 30 seconds to 1 minute, you'll be more than enough (this already activates circulation and stimulates the immune system).

3. AN ORDERED SANDWICH:
WATER-SOAP-WATER

First, we moisten thoroughly, like 30 seconds of JUST water. Soak it up, as they say. It seems obvious, but there are some who skip foreplay and go all out, generally in life; and then they complain about lubrication problems (we're referring to the soap, oc).

After being well moistened, comes an important debate:

  • ?Team body soap either...

  • Team soap massage between your hands and then spread with your palms/sponge/mittens over your body?

Well, it's a matter of taste, really. The second kind makes your soap last longer, but on the other hand, you have to make sure you change your sponge every month and a half unless you want to scrub something that looks worse than the car wash fringes.

4. PRODUCTS THAT FIT YOUR BODY SERRANO

You watch what you eat, you don't wear nylon underwear, or buy itchy clothes... well, the same thing happens in the shower. What you put on your body not only goes down the drain but also sticks to your skin. That's why we look for quality soaps (ahem ahem), that cleanse without drying, that provide extra nourishment or an active ingredient to the skin, and, if we're asking, that are a pleasure to apply, reapply, and smell right next to your neck.

5. THE MENEÍTO: FROM TOP TO DOWN AND FROM INSIDE OUT

Once you've selected the soap that works best for you, where you start lathering matters. We go from head to toe and from "cavities" to the exterior. Simply to ensure the water "falls" and washes away the dirt, and, incidentally, that we don't forget any hollows. The "less" practiced areas tend to be: the nape of the neck and behind the ears, elbows, knees, and soles of the feet. These are also places where you scrape and scrub. Rubbing with water is necessary but not sufficient.

6. THE MAGIC OF DRYING

Ideally, while in the shower, you should first wipe off the water with your own hands (as if your hands were a windshield wiper). This will save you up to 60% of the work on your towel.

Plus, once you're out of the shower, the towel works better at absorbing spilled coffee like a paper towel. It's better to dab rather than drag.

7. THE AFTERWARDS

Even after using the right-temperature water, using a quality soap, and gently drying yourself, you may find that your skin is peeling. At certain times (hello, winter) or at certain moments (e.g., after your second shower of the day), you're drier than a cup of talcum powder. For those times, your ally is body moisturizer. Not always, not every day... but it saves you and softens your skin so that all the hard work you've done in the pool, on your bike, or at the gym isn't visually ruined by not investing 20 seconds in a good self-massage.

8. EXTRA TIP: HOW TO LAST LONGER

We always refer to soap:

  • Before releasing it: in the bathroom drawer or cabinet, very dark and dry.

  • During the shower: It is better not to leave it under the tap or on the floor.

  • After the shower: that it stops coming into contact with water. On a soap dish or dry surface, preferably.

  • And if it lasts less than a week... Well, someone is stealing it while you sleep, or your bathroom has a microclimate more humid than a taxi driver's back in the Seville summer.

And with all that, you're more than equipped to enjoy it to the fullest, a, ante, contra, suitable, and in this shower, all prepositions fit. Alone or accompanied.
