Pink washing? ... PINK LIVING!! 💃🌈

If you walk around town or scroll through social media these days, you'll think you've fallen into the Pantone color cauldron. A leprechaun could wander into Twitter and die from an epileptic overdose. That's pretty much it, all around you.

🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈

But… is all that glitters gold (or rainbows)? Today we're talking about pinkwashing, or in other words, crashing other people's parties, being a total buzzkill, and not even bringing drinks or a few measly canapés from the supermarket downstairs for snacks. Because in Siwon, we prefer to see life in color 365 days a year.

Pinkwashing - I wear the colored logo 1 day a year

What is pinkwashing?

So, in basic terms, it's about getting involved with LGBT causes. only to put on a show and look good in the photo or for benefit (economic, political, etc.) ... without being any of those things.

Other ways to express it:

  • Getting on the Pride float just for the lirili and not because of the lerele

  • To get close to the sun that's hottest in June…

  • I only love you for what you can get, Andrés…

  • Hanging out with the popular kids in class…

  • In short; let your true colors show more than your true colors.

LGBTI wasn't always fashionable (😅), but nowadays, Pride has become a huge party that everyone joins in on.

89% of Spaniards She sees sexual diversity as something natural; gay marriage is legal in almost all of Europe and the US, trans rights are on the table... The LGBTQ+ community, the rainbow that's everywhere these days, isn't taboo; it's mainstream.

And that's great!. The more of us there are, the better.

But sometimes, it's very noticeable that, especially with some brands, it's not entirely consistent.

An example:

The other day, several Twitter users took the profiles of some multinationals in Europe… And they compared them to their Twitter profiles in the Middle East.

Surprise, Surprise!:

In countries where wearing rainbow colors IS risky, because the LGBTQ+ community remains repressed, profile pictures remained the same. Not a trace of the multicolored paradise.

I don't know, Rick... it seems fake. 🤔

How to come out of the pinkwashing closet?

There's no magic formula, just large doses of common sense, whether you're a company, an individual (or even a politician). 😅):

  • If you're going to defend something, defend it equally everywhere, regardless of who it offends. ○ Obviously this doesn't apply if you're in danger of any kind... but in the long run we're all happier if what we think is aligned with what we feel and what we do.

  • Ideally, all year round. Not just one day. ○ There's no need to be a pain. It's a matter of not getting caught out by contradictions related to the equinox.

  • Outside, but above all, inside. ○ We are in an era where there are no longer conversations that don't have a place in kitchens and living rooms, nor in meeting rooms and office hallways.

  • It is neither necessary (nor generous) to hoard. ○ You don't have to be the life of the party. It's great to offer support, space, and a platform to others…

  • Beware of euphemisms that also serve to hide realities. We don't celebrate 'love or people'. It's better to talk about faggots, lesbians, queer, gays, trans, bis, non-binary people… ○ Because what is not named, does not exist. And what is named helps to build realities.

He who is without sin... is just boring.

Having said all this, it gets more complicated every day and there are more easily offended people who will always point the finger saying that everything that is done 'is wrong'.

Some have a point, because they've seen their rights trampled on for a long time. Others do it purely for the national sport of trolling... because they're sons of bitches, that's what I call it.

At every Pride event, we're going to run into the same old song and dance and trap over and over again:

  • That, if it's better to hang rainbows everywhere now, even if it's just to sell merchandise;

  • What if the flag has been perverted is worse;

  • What we should do is put up even more rainbows;

  • What we should really be doing is to de-escalate all this colorful, festive revelry a little and focus more on political activism.

Each time, we ourselves have to be more careful because there will always be someone who criticizes what is said or done. But... look... if the intention is good, then let's go for it and all the better!

They bark, then we ride (in a carriage)

So… whatever they say… we will continue celebrating.

In Siwon we're going all out. With any excuse that allows us to embrace all sexual and gender identities. We are gay (and lesbians and trans people aren't yet, but they will join the team, just like the entire spectrum of the rainbow). 365 days a year. And we claim making a fool of oneself.

Any kind of party is worth it if the joy is good, and Pride is the best of the best: so let's dance it up and down.

So everything's covered in rainbows? Even better! Let's celebrate Pride this year! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

We do cool right,

Siwon
