GAY SUPERPOWERS

Being part of the initials isn't a superpower. But for once a year, we're going to romanticize it.

Because, if there's one thing we've learned after a few decades of Almodóvar films, Lady Gaga songs, and terrace conversations, it's that perhaps there are a number of queer powers worth reclaiming.

1. THE POWER OF THE INTERNAL GPS (OR HOW TO FIND PATHS WITHOUT A MAP)

José Esteban Muñoz spoke of queerness as a promise, as a future yet to come. And, although he explained it infinitely better, we're left with a very broad-brush idea: some people start their lives with an IKEA plan (you're born, you study, you get married, you have 2.1 children, and you retire) and others assemble their own furniture and wardrobes without instructions.

Without many role models or examples to draw inspiration from… developing a certain taste for exploration. Or a fairly high tolerance for improvising on the fly.

Perhaps that's why chosen families, friendships that are almost like brothers, or more relaxed ways of understanding masculinity didn't emerge from a committee of experts or an academy, but from people experimenting, making mistakes, and finding their place. Because when you don't have a map, you end up developing a compass.

2. THE POWER TO FLY (FIGUREDLY, OF COURSE)

Bell hooks spoke of the margins as a place from which to observe. When you've never quite fit in, you develop a certain habit of looking at things from the outside. As if you could rise a few feet and see the whole forest beyond the branches.

And from up there you begin to suspect that perhaps things are not so inevitable; that many “rules” are simply customs with mass marketing and that different ways of aging, of being a couple, of working, of taking care of oneself or of being successful are perfectly possible.

After all, "things have always been this way" is a phrase that has aged poorly.

3. THE SUPERPOWER OF SHAPE CHANGE

Paul B. Preciado has written extensively about how queer lives function as laboratories for experimentation. Trans, non-binary, or simply non-normative people demonstrate that bodies, identities, and ways of presenting ourselves to the world are far more fluid and malleable than we imagined.

Without intending to, queer people have sometimes been a kind of R&D department for culture. Not because we're more modern (which we are), but because we were born with a certain facility for metamorphosis and change.

To challenge what it means to be attractive, to choose which inherited parts of ourselves we want to keep and which to modify, to shape how we want to present ourselves to the world and relate to it, … .

4. THE MOST IMPORTANT POWER OF ALL: CREATING BEAUTIFUL FUTURES

Many things that seem "normal" today started out as marginal: divorce, the internet, sharing a flat with friends, going to therapy, tight clothes, or living together without getting married.

They started as oddities… and ended up being the norm. And that's why this might be the best gay superpower: creating futures.

Now more than ever.

Because in times of angry people on Twitter, techno-oligarchs, dystopian threats, and environmental catastrophes, the temptation is to give up. To think that everything is getting worse. That everything has already been invented. That things are just the way they are.

But queer history, with all its wounds and fissures, seems determined to prove the opposite: that there are always creative ways to rebuild. New networks of care; kinder ways of being a man, a person, a family, and a community.

In short: the ability to imagine beautiful futures when things get a little rough.

And in that respect, allow us to puff out our chests a little. Because if there's one thing we queers know how to do, it's create beautiful things and then convince the rest of the world to want them for themselves too.

Ser de las siglas no es un superpoder. Pero por una vez al año lo vamos a romantizar.

Porque, si algo hemos aprendido después de unas cuantas décadas de películas de Almodóvar, canciones de Lady Gaga y conversaciones de terraza, es que quizá existen una serie de poderes queer que merece la pena reivindicar.

1. EL PODER DEL GPS INTERNO (O CÓMO ENCONTRAR CAMINOS SIN MAPA)

José Esteban Muñoz hablaba de lo queer como una promesa, como un futuro todavía por llegar. Y, aunque él lo explicaba infinitamente mejor, nosotros nos quedamos con una idea muy de brocha gorda: hay peña que empieza su vida con un plano de Ikea (naces, estudias, te casas, tienes 2,1 hijos y te jubilas) y otra que se monta los muebles y armarios sin instrucciones.

Sin demasiados referentes, ni ejemplos en los que inspirarse… desarrollando un cierto gusto por la exploración. O una tolerancia bastante alta a improvisar sobre la marcha.

Quizá por eso las familias elegidas, las amistades que son casi hermanos o formas más relajadas de entender la masculinidad no salieron de un comité de expertos ni de una academia, sino de personas haciendo pruebas, equivocándose y buscando sitio. Porque cuando no tienes mapa, acabas desarrollando brújula.

2. EL PODER DE VOLAR (FIGURADAMENTE, SE ENTIENDE)

Bell hooks hablaba del margen como un lugar desde el que observar. Cuando nunca has encajado del todo, desarrollas cierta costumbre de mirar las cosas desde fuera. Como si pudieras elevarte unos metros y ver el bosque entero más allá de las ramas.

Y desde ahí arriba empiezas a sospechar que quizá las cosas no son tan inevitables; que muchas “normas” son simplemente costumbres con un marketing de masas y que formas distintas de envejecer, de ser pareja, de trabajar, de cuidarse o de tener éxito son perfectamente posibles.

Al fin y al cabo, "las cosas siempre han sido así" es una frase que ha envejecido regular.

3. EL SUPERPODER DE CAMBIAR DE FORMA

Paul B. Preciado ha escrito mucho sobre cómo las vidas queer funcionan como laboratorios de experimentación. Las personas trans, no binarias o simplemente no normativas muestran que los cuerpos, las identidades y las formas de presentarnos al mundo son bastante más fluidas y modificables de lo que imaginábamos.

Sin pretenderlo demasiado, las personas queer hemos sido a veces una especie de departamento de I+D de la cultura. No porque seamos más modernas (que también) sino porque veníamos de fábrica con una cierta facilidad para la metamorfosis y el cambio.

Para retar qué significa ser atractivo, elegir qué partes de nosotros heredadas queríamos mantener y cuáles modificar, modelar cómo nos queremos presentar ante el mundo y relacionarnos con él…

4. EL PODER MÁS IMPORTANTE DE TODOS: CREAR FUTUROS BONITOS

Muchas cosas que hoy parecen “normales” empezaron siendo margen: el divorcio, internet, compartir piso con amigos, ir a terapia, la ropa ajustada o convivir sin casarse.

Empezaron siendo rarezas… para acabar siendo norma. Y por eso este quizá sea el mejor superpoder marica. El de crear futuros.

Ahora más que nunca.

Porque en tiempos de señores muy enfadados en Twitter, tecno-oligarcas, amenazas distópicas y catastrofismos medioambientales; la tentación es rendirse. Pensar que todo va a peor. Que ya está todo inventado. Que las cosas son como son.

Pero la historia marica, con todas sus heridas y todas sus fisuras, parece empeñarse en demostrar lo contrario: que siempre hay maneras creativas de reconstruir. Nuevas redes de cuidados; formas más amables de ser hombre, persona, familia y comunidad.

En definitiva: la capacidad de imaginar futuros bonitos cuando la cosa se pone un poco chunga.

Y en eso, permitidnos sacar un poco de pecho. Porque si algo sabemos hacer los maricas es crear cosas preciosas y luego convencer al resto del mundo de que también las quiera para sí.
