Combinations impotential active ingredients in cosmetics

Pears with pears, and apples with apples...because there are some things that shouldn't be mixed.

The metaphor; the literary device… well, it has aged poorly; worse even than the relaxing cup of coffee in Puerta del Sol.

But you still see that same overwhelming logic today in any cosmetics blog: that if you can't mix vitamin C with retinoids, don't even think about mixing exfoliants with retinol…
We're more into Macedonia.

So today we're going to debunk some of those supposed impossible couples

NEVER MIX:

•     RETINOL AND VITAMIN C     •

What you'll read: Vitamin C (that ingredient that makes your skin so juicy and bite-able) and retinol (the ultimate anti-wrinkle) don't get along because they work at different pH levels and, in combination, they irritate you.

What we know today: science evolves, now different pHs can be formulated in the same formula (e.g., by microencapsulating ingredients, with more stable derivatives, with progressive release systems, …) and there are studies that support that together, they enhance their effects.

Commercial tip: You can use our TanTanGo Vitamin C antioxidant and self-tanning serum and our Wowyoung retinol serum together to see the cumulative effects on your face. Even better in summer.

•     EXFOLIATING ACIDS (BHA AND AHA) AND RETINOL     •

What you'll read: that retinol thins your skin, exfoliants roughen it (your face), and you end up with irritation if you combine them. That it's better to do skin cycling and alternate them on different days…

What we know today: the mechanisms of action are completely unrelated and act on entirely different cells and receptors. After the initial NORMAL acclimation period to retinol (called retinization, which can last 1-2 months)... there's no problem going full throttle with exfoliation. And not alternating days or anything... ALL AT ONCE.

Commercial plug: If you're using our Wowyoung night serum with retinol… try adding Coffee Crush, our physical + chemical exfoliant. It'll give you a wonderful feeling, a real pleasure, and a baby-soft complexion like you just escaped from paradise.

•     NIACINAMIDE AND… ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT     •

What you'll read: that you shouldn't mix niacinamide with… STOP.

What we know today: Niacinamide, or vitamin B3, is that great (versatile) and stable active ingredient. No matter the combination you use, it's always perfect for your face and causes very few adverse reactions (though they do exist). With retinol, it helps smooth your skin like polished cement; with vitamin C, it helps reduce blemishes; with exfoliating acids, it's great for acne and oil control… a true all-rounder!

Commercial insert: Our Handsomefyers contain 5% Niacinamide and you can use them at the end of any treatment you choose because they won't interfere; they'll support it.

THE FUN IS IN THE MIX

The absolute headlines: never mix… strictly forbidden… fatal error… generate a lot of clicks but little information.

Those of us who do this combine everything imaginable: because it's fun and because science today supports it (and those who don't support it... well, you know...).

Variety and mix are what make the difference.
