10 COMMANDMENTS FOR A WASTED SUMMER

We were taught that summer is for bicycles. And for 'making the most of it'. For reading, traveling, learning… and returning in September as an improved version of ourselves. Today, we propose the opposite.

1. YOU WILL NOT PLAN

You'll make room for "what ifs," lingering after-dinner conversations, and spontaneous plans. You'll cherish naps, long showers after the beach, switched-off phones, and "I'm out of the office."

2. YOU WILL SHOW OFF YOUR LOVE HANDLES

You will show your belly, gray hair, receding hairline, and scars without shame or permission. You will venerate the body that has brought you to this summer and you will parade it, every day, along the seashore or up and down the promenade.

3. You will laze

You'll confuse bed, sofa, hammock, and towel. You'll walk slowly, listen slowly, and sleep soundly. You'll be late for almost everything (almost nothing important happens on schedule). If someone asks you what you've done today, you'll proudly reply, "Just enough."

4. YOU WILL LIFT YOUR HEAD

To see more sunsets than screens. More waves than notifications. More people strolling than Instagram reels. You'll look more and record less. You'll take fewer photos (no offense to Bad Bunny) but you'll keep more memories.

5. YOU WILL EAT ICE CREAM

And you'll devour the buffet, the paella, and the barbecue. You'll linger over meals and conversations until, one day, they all blend together. You won't respect schedules (except for the buffet, of course), macros, or manners.

6. You won't envy other people's summers

The algorithm will tempt you, but don't take the bait. There will always be a more pristine beach, a more luxurious hotel, or a more tanned body. But THE best beach is the one where you actually managed to find parking (and that rarely shows up on Instagram).

7. YOU WILL REPEAT

You'll go back to the same beach bar, order your usual. You'll order another round. And another. You'll go back to the same beach and walk along the same promenade. You'll meet up with your usual friends, have the same conversations, tell the same stories, and laugh together again.

8. YOU WILL DISCONNECT

Work, rushing, and emails. You'll reconnect with a game of cards, a aimless conversation, a rice dish that still needs to rest. You'll talk less about what you should/have to do and more about how the people you care about are doing.

9. YOU WILL GET BORED

Stargazing, searching for crabs among rocks, or staring into the depths of a pool for hours. You'll start books you won't finish. You won't try to fill the silences or the moments when absolutely nothing is happening.

10. YOU WILL WASTE THE SUMMER

You won't turn summer into another project; you won't come back from vacation a better version of yourself. Not more cultured, not fitter, not more productive. If you come back the same, or even a little worse, but considerably less tired... then summer will have been worth it.

IN SHORT:

The obligation to make the most of summer is officially repealed. Because we've spent eleven months trying to optimize absolutely everything. Maybe July and August aren't for that. Maybe it's time to enjoy ourselves without showing it, rest without justification, and waste a lot of time.

HAPPY SUMMER. AND I HOPE YOU WASTE IT A LOT.
